Spades Rules

Spades is a trick taking game comprised of a 52 standard deck of cards. The spades suit is the trump suit that outranks the other suits of clubs, daimonds and hearts. The ranks of the cards in each suit are as expected Ace, King, Queen down to 2.

In a four player game, cards are dealt round robin to each player from the dealer untill all cards are dealt.

If partnerships are formed, the combined bids of the partners are submitted for how many tricks that they think they can make. The total tricks will be 13. Partnerships are formed across from another player.

Each made bid equals 10 points. Any bid over the submitted bid for the tricks adds another 1 point.

Bids made over the submitted bids also add a "bag" to the player/partnership totals.

Failed bids subtract the bid * 10 from the player/partnership total points.

Once the bag total reaches 10 then 100 points is subtracted from the offending partnership totals.

A spade suit card cannot be dealt initially. It can be dealt if a player has no other card in their hand that matches the lead suit that is in the pile/center.

The spades card will "cut" or outrank other cards in other suits no matter what the rank of that suit card.

The player the next to the dealer will lead the round with any card other than a spade. All players must match the suit of the card initially played, if they cannot then they can play any card.

They player with highest ranking card of the suit played collects the trick of four cards and also starts the next hand.

After each round bookkeeping of points and bags are recorded.

The game concludes when a partnership's the total points equals or succeeds 500 points or some lower number for a shorter game.
